WILLISTON-ELKO HIGH SCHOOL

STUDIO ART SYLLABUS

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ADVANCED STUDY*

TEACHER: DONNA N. BRATCHER, M.F.A.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO HELP YOU ACQUIRE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE AND SUPPORT YOUR OWN PERSONAL DECISIONS ABOUT WORKS OF ART.  IN ORDER TO DO THIS, YOU MUST LEARN THE VOCABULARY OF ART.  ARTISTS USE MANY DIFFERENT COLORS, VALUES, LINES, TEXTURE, SHAPES, FORMS, AND SPACIAL RELATIONSHIPS TO CREATE THEIR WORKS. THESE ARE CALLED THE “ELEMENTS OF ART”.   IDENTIFYING AND DISCUSSING THE ELEMENTS OF ART IN EXAMPLES SHARED IN CLASS WILL FACILITATE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY WORKS OF ART. THIS COURSE WILL OFFER A BROAD RANGE OF VISUAL ART EXPERIENCES BASED ON ART WORKS AND ART STYLES OF VARIOUS CULTURES AND TIMES IN HISTORY.  THE CONCEPTS OF AESTHETICS, ART CRITICISM, ART HISTORY, AND ART PRODUCTION ARE REINFORCED THROUGHOUT THE PROGRAM.

GOALS

MY GOAL AS YOUR ART INSTRUCTOR IS TO HELP YOU TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF CREATIVITY, SELF-ANALYSIS, AND PLANNING AND TO PROMOTE HIGHER-ORDER THINKING ALONG WITH ORIGINAL AND CRITICAL THINKING, TO HELP YOUR COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT AND FACTUAL RECALL. PLUS I WANT TO HELP YOUR PROBLEM SOLVING AND LANGUAGE SKILLS, ALONG WITH THE PROMOTION OF A GREATER PERCEPTUAL AWARENESS, AND A GREATER AWARENESS OF ART AS AN HISTORICAL MEANS OF COMMUNICATION.
