AP Biology is a college-level Biology course taught to high school students. Universities expect the course to be the equivalent of a freshman Biology major's coursework. At the end of the year, students are given a standardized exam, which will determine their eligibility for college credit. Students must exercise exceptional organizational skills in order to meet the demands of this course.
AP Biology takes a conceptual approach to address the vast scope of the subject of Biology. The course focuses on developing an enduring understanding within each student of 4 Big Ideas and the essential content knowledge that supports them. Throughout the course, the following 4 Big Ideas are emphasized and form the various units:
Big Idea 1: The process of evolution drives the diversity and unity of life.
Big Idea 2: Biological systems utilize free energy and molecular building blocks to grow, to reproduce and maintain dynamic homeostasis.
Big Idea 3: Living systems store, retrieve, transmit and respond to information essential to life processes.
Big Idea 4: Biological systems interact, and these systems and their interactions possess complex properties.
AP Biology is a fast paced, hands-on course. Students, I look forward to taking this journey with you throughout the year. Come prepared to learn and we will have fun learning Biology together!
