Summer Reading Initiative Program 2017

Pop Open a Good Book!

Read over the summer to participate in Kelly Edwards Elementary School's POP party!!!

Children who don't read over the summer experience summer learning loss.  We hope you will join us in promoting the importance of reading during the summer months.  Please read 9 books or more and complete 9 Reading Responses and return it to school by Monday, August 21, 2017.  We will have a POP party to celebrate all the kids who read or who are read to over the summer. (Click on the picture below to review a suggested summer reading list.)

Third Graders Must Demonstrate Proficiency in Reading to be Promoted

Beginning 2017-2018

Third Graders Who Fail to Meet Reading Proficiency Will be Retained

As you may be aware, the South Carolina Read to Succeed Act, which became law in 2014, aims to improve literacy and reading proficiency for all children in our state.  The new law includes some significant changes regarding the promotion and retention of third grade students.

Please note that these changes do not take effect until the school year 2017-18.  This school year's first grade students (2015-16) will be the first group of third grade students to be impacted by this portion of the Read to Succeed Law.
